Since 1988, a gem amongst cabaret theatres has been based on the fifth floor of the Mehringdamm in Kreuzberg: the Berliner Kabarett Anstalt, known as the BKA Theatre for short or – as the Berliners call it – the BKA.
Over more than three decades, these three letters have become synonymous with the finest entertainment in the genres of chanson, cabaret, comedy, music and musical theatre.
The combination of sophisticated, offbeat and political entertainment; that has been the BKA’s programme and concept since its foundation in 1988, when ‘Die Enterbten’ – the successors to the disbanded Cabaret des Westens (CaDeWe) – opened the theatre in April 1988.
Since then, political and musical cabaret, off-musicals and comedy have shared the stage on an equal footing, alongside contemporary music, poetry and singer-songwriter programmes; the whole kaleidoscope of contemporary stage life: masterful, provocative, sometimes politically incorrect, never pandering, occasionally trashy, but always distinctive and always in tune with the times.
Following the theatre’s major refurbishment in 2013 and the extension of the small stage in early 2019, the ‘Nachtschiene’ programme was launched in the club-like atmosphere of the BKA foyer.
