The approx. 26 ha property is the former Speck estate. On the foundations of the 18th century manor house, Dr. Kurt Herrmann, publisher and state councillor, had a hunting lodge, the "Speck Castle", built from 1929 to 1937. The ensemble of buildings created during this period still characterises the area today, which is embedded in a landscaped park and has a view of and direct access to the Hofsee lake. After Dr. Herrmann's expropriation in 1945, the castle served as a Soviet commandant's office, seat of the forestry administration and transit camp for refugees. Since 1954, it has been a recreation home for the German border police and, after expansion in 1969, a recreation home for officers of the National People's Army (NVA). The state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Ministry of Agriculture and Nature Conservation) used the property as the headquarters for the national park administration from 1991 to 1998. Today the property is privately owned.
Special features
The size of the property, its location on the edge of the sparsely populated village of Speck and its nesting between three lakes allows for the seclusion necessary to realise film projects without disturbance.
